Behind the Blue Door
A Vade Mecum on Tipping the Velvet
by Sami Goldhurst
Rachel Levinson, a 20 year old Psychology Student, struggling with student debt, gets a job in a tantric massage parlour, to help pay her way through college. She adopts the work sobriquet of Cindy.
Her first client is a mysterious elderly Indian gentleman, Vishti, who appears shy and naïve. His visit to the massage parlour begins as a nervous diversion from a frigid wife, who denies him the experience of pleasuring a woman orally.
Cindy decides that introducing Vishti to the pleasures of sex will be her mission. Although Vishti’s only knowledge of cunnilingus comes from reading the Kama Sutra, his tongue provides Cindy with the best orgasms she has ever experienced.
Although Vishti remains as a client, they become more and more intimate. Cindy’s first, self-imposed, rule in her day job requires that she won’t date clients, so she refuses to accept that she is falling in love with him.
Cindy breaks off the relationship, but during the course of the break-up, Vishti discovers that Rachel was abused as a child. He realises that this abuse has left her psychologically damaged, with Cindy emerging as a dominant personality and Rachel being the submissive.
When their sexual relationship ends, Vishti becomes more of a mentor, taking on the role of a life/spiritual guide. He suggests a path whereby Rachel can use her sexual talents to meet people who can help her to achieve her material goals.
Cindy/Rachel’s life flows through a series of crises. She explores varied and torrid sexual exploits, engages in a lesbian relationship with her college roommate Dixie, and then falls passionately in love with the aristocratic Cassandra, the wife of a client from the massage parlour.
Rachel seeks fulfillment through material success, using money from her sex work to pay for an expensive home and lifestyle where she can meet wealthy City types. Ultimately, she bags the elephant, a successful Hedge Fund CEO who becomes her sugar-daddy.
Rachel enjoys the jet set lifestyle, though Vishti knows that she will never achieve fulfilment until he can exorcise the Cindy demon that lives within her. Rachel’s life follows a series of crests and valleys as her relationship with Vishti passes through several phases from client to lover to mentor and ultimately soulmate.
Whilst Cindy/Rachel achieves everything she could wish for sexually and materially, she leaves many casualties along the way, mostly discarded lovers but including her own fractured soul.
The first volume of the Trilogy ends with a glimpse of salvation, when Rachel meets the man she believes may have been the vision from Vishti’s prophecy of her more settled future.
